Yes, it is true…the chickens have a home before us. We must thank our beautiful friend Kay who has been raising organic chickens for years for introducing us. We have learned a ton from her and decided to give it a try ourselves. We bought a coop on Amazon, put it together and made many visits to Kay’s farm to learn as much as we could. Our friend Joanne also helped inspire us to just go for it and assured us that they are easy to care for. At first, we thought this would be a great experience for the kids, but it turned out to be perfect for mom and dad too. We just love them.
We started with eight chickens and quickly realized how much we enjoy them, so now we have a dozen. We had to buy a bigger coop to hold them and expanded the run. The kids each named one and a few friends and family named the others. It is delightful to watch and take care of each one. It’s amazing how quickly you learn from them. They love to sit up high and rush outside when we open the coop door in the morning. Each bird turns sideways and slides down the door into the run. They love to eat organic greens, grapes and pumpkin seeds. Many of our chickens are still babies, but when they all start laying eggs in January, we will have a beautiful array of eggs.
